Tips for Optimising Your Revision Under COVID-19 Restrictions
Even as we move into the first phase of safe re-opening post Circuit Breaker, it is not studies as usual in schools and tuition centres. With schools alternating between HBL and physical classes, and tuition lessons having to be conducted online, students have to take charge of their learning if they want to excel. What can you do to optimise your revision when your year-end exams are looming on the horizon? Taking the initiative is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
1. Draw up a revision time-table and stick to it
We often over-estimate our abilities to stay disciplined, and then watch in horror as time slipped through our hands. Drawing up a revision time-table for yourself helps you stay disciplined, as well as focused on your end goals (to ace your examinations). Don’t go overboard in planning too many things though, and leave pockets of time for R&R, to allow you to take some time off mentally and physically.
2. Make full use of the technology tools you have on hand
No physical lessons with your teachers? Not a problem. With ZOOM and other similar online meeting rooms that are all the rage now, you can still arrange to have one to one consultations with your tutors, and it is not an excuse to slack just because you cannot meet up with them physically. Learn all the tools you have on hand to assist you in revision, be it sharing a working document on Google Docs so that you can work together with your teachers or classmates on your essays, or reading up on general study tips (like this!) or other useful articles pertaining to your weak subjects, which we have plenty written on our blog.
3. Start practising on past year examination questions and submit to your teachers and/or tutors for marking
Practice makes perfect. With less than 5 months to go before the GCE Cambridge examinations, it is absolutely critical to start honing your time management skills and your exam answering techniques. Especially for humanities and language subjects where writing is imperative, look for examination questions from past years’ ‘O’/’A’ Level papers or school preliminary examination papers and attempt various questions within the allocated time. Submit your completed questions to your teachers or tutors for marking and constructive comments. Learn from your mistakes, make corrections, and improve on your future attempts.
COVID-19 may have disrupted normal life in 2020 significantly, but it doesn’t have to be a roadblock on your path to scoring distinctions. It does mean that you have to become more proactive in your learning in order to do well, but it should be easily achievable with our above tips. Good luck!
