In the recently concluded 2016 GCE O-Level examinations for Geography Elective, the 8-mark open-ended question in Section C tripped up many students:

GCE 2016 O-Level Question:

"A fatalistic approach to earthquakes and tsunamis is more sensible than any other." How far do you agree? Give evidence to support your answer.

Other examples of open-ended questions for the different topics:

"Eco-tourism will be less successful over time." How far do you agree with this statement? Support your answer with examples.

Or,

"Migration is the main social-cultural reason to explain changing food preferences around the world." How far do you agree with this statement? Support your answer using evidence.

How should candidates approach questions like these?

1. State your stand. Do you agree or disagree to a small or large extent?

2. Agreement of statement to be supported by the appropriate examples and evidence.

3. Disagreement of statement to be supported by the appropriate examples and evidence. By considering both sides of the argument with valid and sound examples will result in the highest level of marks given.

4. A convincing, suitable conclusion, and reiteration of your stand.
